Updated Transfer Truth: Soldado To Tottenham

Posted on Jul 20th, 2013 by James Ellaby

We've already reported on the rumour linking Roberto Soldado to Spurs and there seems to have some further movement from White Hart Lane that suggest their next signing could be a striker.

Soldado: Transfer Truth: 75%
Last time out we gave the chances of Soldado moving to Tottenham a 60% transfer truth rating, based on reports that there had been a £17m bid from Spurs, but without hard facts to substantiate it.

Now we've got a quote from Valencia president Amadeo Salvo saying that there has been a new bid of £20m, but insisting that the Spanish club are in no hurry to sell him:

The English team knows the situation. Valencia needs money. But we don't have to sell our best player.

There's apparently a £25m buy-out clause for the striker, who scored 24 goals last season and has has blossomed on the international stage of late, with 6 goals in 11 appearances.

There have been reports in Spain of meetings between the club and Soldado's agent, which have seen Valencia taking a hard line, but the existence of the buy-out clause means that they can only hold out up to a certain point.

A month ago, when the rumour first surfaced, the player spoke out in favour of staying loyal to Los Che:

It is clear for me that I want to stay here and help Valencia return to the Champions League, where we deserve to be. That is despite the fact that we have not achieved our aim of doing that this season.

Our Truth-o-meter
Spurs are consistently being linked with strikers at the moment, and it seems to be coming down between Soldado and Christian Benteke, though there's not yet sign of an active interest in the latter.

So if these two bids for Soldado are genuine, the question that remains is whether Spurs will give up testing the water and put in a bid to trigger his release clause. He's a talented goalscorer who would definitely boost their chances of Champions League qualification, but can they get him?

Likeliness of Signing: 55%
