Transfer Truth: The Truth on Vadillo to Tottenham

Posted on Jul 18th, 2013 by James Ellaby

Being linked to teenagers known as 'the new [INSERT TOP PLAYER'S NAME]' is a run-of-the-mill event for big English clubs, and today's candidate for Spurs is 'The New Cristiano Ronaldo', otherwise known as Alvaro Vadillo.

Transfer Truth: 30%
Vadillo is an 18-year-old Spanish winger who plays for Real Betis and is working his way up through the youth set-up at national level. He's been appearing in La Liga since he was 16, making him the second-youngest player ever.

A cruciate ligament injury held up his progress (though he apparently spent his time off learning English, which sounds like a rock-solid piece of transfer evidence to us) and he's still very much a developing talent.

So why are Spurs after him? Well, according to the Daily Mirror, they want him as a potential Gareth Bale replacement, not necessarily this summer (as they don't want to sell Bale this summer) but in years to come.

If they get in early and buy him from Betis at a decent price, then develop him themselves, they could save themselves a small fortune and a load of competition from the big Spanish clubs.

Or, at least, that's the theory in the papers.

Our Truth-O-Meter
Any story about 'the new [INSERT TOP PLAYER'S NAME]' should be taken with a pinch of salt because they tend to sound better in journalists' heads than they do to the clubs involved.

There's no real evidence that Spurs want to sign Vadillo or are even aware of him, and he doesn't seem like someone who is ready to come straight into the Premier League and be a success.

Having said that, they'd hardly be the first team to take a Spanish youngster when they are cheap and turn them into top quality players, then sell them back to Spain (Fabregas, Pique...).

But until we see any real sign that there's anything to this story, we're not holding our breath.
