Transfer Truth: The Truth on Siqueira to Everton

Posted on Jul 19th, 2013 by James Ellaby

For Roberto Martinez, his first priorities since taking over from David Moyes at Everton have been to try and hold onto the likes of Leighton Baines. But does he has a Brazilian replacement in mind?

Transfer Truth: 60%
Spanish paper Marca reckon that Gilherme Siqueira is close to signing for the Toffees from Granada. Siqueira is a 27-year-old who has spent much of his career in Italy and can operate as a traditional left-back or a more attacking wing-back.

That would make him an ideal replacement for Baines if he were to be sold this summer, as well as fitting into the kind of full-back that Martinez liked to operate with at Wigan.

Siqueira may have started out in Italy, but it is since he first joined Granada on loan from Udinese in 2010 that he's started to make a name for himself, particularly last year when he scored a really cheeky penalty against Barcelona. It was all the more remarkable because his team were 5-1 down at that point...

His penalty-taking skills have seen him score 13 times for Granada (including a couple of goals from open play), which will be an added enticement for Martinez, if there's any truth in this rumour, of course.

Our Truth-O-Meter
Marca aren't always the most trustworthy of sources, but it seems an odd rumour for them to make up (a player from a small-ish Spanish club moving to Everton), so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that there's something to it.

Of course, the bigger story lurking in the background is that, if Everton are buying a left-back, what does that mean for Baines? Is he close to that Man United move? We'll just have to wait and see.
