Transfer Truth: The Truth on Rodriguez to Tottenham

Posted on Jul 26th, 2013 by James Ellaby

Tottenham Hotspur's chances of signing one of the hottest young talents in world football looks to be over with Real Madrid set to convince Jese Rodriguez to wait for his turn.

The 20-year-old Spaniard forward has only made a couple of appearances for Madrid's first team but has set the world on fire for their Castilla team, scoring more goals for them last season than anyone since Emilio Butregueno almost 30 years ago. In 38 appearances he scored 22 times and made 12 assists.

He's also impressed at every level of Spanish youth national football, including getting five goals at the Under-20 World Cup this year.

With those kind of stats behind him, it's no wonder the likes of Spurs are apparently paying an interest in the state of his contract, which is due to expire next summer. He admitted earlier in the month that he was uncertain about his future.

I don't know what the club wants with me. I assume they will want to offer me a renewal, but I don't know what I will do. I am not going to lie about it.

However, AS are saying that his agent is now in talks with Madrid over a new contract that will double his wages and set a huge release clause to deter any suitors.

Our Truth-O-Meter
English clubs have occasionally done well in sneaking young Spanish talent away from La Liga (Fabregas and Pique being examples) and a player as exciting as Rodriguez is bound to draw both attention and speculation.

However, it's hard to see him moving to White Hart Lane just for some first team football, when the likes of Zinedine Zidane are fighting for him to stay at the Bernabeu to continue to develop.

So we really can't see this happening outside of the dreams of very optimistic Spurs fans, but he would be an outstanding capture for anyone if he could be tempted abroad.
