Transfer Truth: The Truth On McCarthy to Everton

Posted on Jul 28th, 2013 by Matt Styrka

Roberto Martinez may be trying to prevent former Everton boss David Moyes from cherry-picking his top players, but that's apparently not stopping him doing the same thing back at Wigan, with James McCarthy his reported target.

McCarthy: Transfer Truth: 45%
Of course, one of the laziest rumours to invent is the idea of a former manager going back to his old club to snaffle his favourite players for his new club, so it's no surprise that this has come up.

Martinez took Wigan to FA Cup glory last year, but they still ended up relegated, so there's plenty of incentive for people like McCarthy to follow him back to Premier League football at Goodison Park.

With Marouane Fellaini's future still very much a cause for speculation (a move to United or Arsenal could be on the cards), Martinez knows that he needs someone in midfield, and McCarthy is his kind of player.

Reports suggest that a fee of around £15-20m would be needed to convince new Latics boss Owen Coyle to let him go, or at least test how realistic his chances are of keeping hold of him but the final figure may well be less.

The Irish international was a first team regular for Wigan last season, scoring three goals in all competitions, and Martinez will be aware that his contract isn't up until 2016, so there's no necessity for him to be sold.

Our Truth-O-Meter
There's nothing solid in these rumours, which come from the Daily Express, while McCarthy has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

That alleged interest from White Hart Lane has seen his price rise, which is a complication for Martinez, who is working with a typically tight budget, at least unless Fellaini moves on for a hefty sum.

Certainly McCarthy would be a good fit for a new Everton style under his old boss, but whether the move can be pulled together is far from certain.
