Transfer Truth: The Truth on Khedira to Chelsea

Posted on Jul 30th, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

Having originally brought Sami Khedira to Real Madrid, stories have broken in Spain which suggest Mourinho could be going back in for his former central midfield player.

Khedira: Transfer Truth: 30%
This story originates from well respected Spanish broadsheet El Confidencial who claimed at the weekend that Chelsea could potentially offer to double the German international's wages. With 2 years remaining on his contract he might not cost the earth either.

El Confidencial
The Spanish newspaper reporting this story were probably one of the only publications that disputed Higuain's father's comments that he was on his way to Arsenal, stated that Real would in fact get around £30m and stood strong all along that Arsenal had not lodged a formal bid. On that occasion they were right and so a fair amount of credence is being applied to their most recent call that Chelsea are in the hunt for Khedira. For this reason we would not doubt that preliminary enquiries might have been made.

What Khedira Was Saying
Even though it is well known that Khedira was an admirer of Mourinho and wished Real had kept hold of him, around 2 weeks ago he gave a long interview, reported in ESPN:

I am full of anticipation as I am still very proud to be playing for Real Madrid. Who plays for this huge club competes for titles. I am convinced that the work under Carlo Ancelotti will take me one step further.

From the full comment it would be reasonable to draw the conclusion that positive contact had been made between the player and his new coach Carlo Ancelotti but of course two weeks is a long time for things to change if Mourinho comes knocking during that time.

The Logic
The logic behind this one is that in a world cup year, when Real Madrid have already spent £34m on anther defensive midfield player (Asier Illarramendi), have promoted an additional one, and are potentially in the hunt for further players in that area this may leave Khedira outside of the clubs requirements. Though that is hard to believe given his obvious world class capabilities and experience.

There is also the implication that Mikel could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge which would also leave Chelsea needing a player on that role. A 2+2 of logic which, on the face of it does appear to add up to somewhere near 4.

There is a strong link between Khedira and Mourinho who signed him at Real. We can also accept the notion that Chelsea might be looking for reinforcements in Khedira's position, though their signing of Illarramendi is more likely to be intended to fill the hole left by Essien's return to Chelsea rather than as a replacement for Khedira.

With nothing concrete beyond logic linking Khedira to Chelsea it's hard to give this one a high rating just yet but we do respect the Spanish source which has reported this story and there are other elements of it (like the 2 years left on Khedira's contract) which are believable too so we're going to kick things off with a 30% truth rating. If he leaves Chelsea will the front runners in a decent sized field so we're sticking in a 30% chance that Chelsea will be his destination if he is sold.
