Transfer Truth: The Truth on Fabregas and Bale to Manchester United

Posted on Jul 22nd, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

The hot news stoking the dying embers of the weekend is that of a sensational Manchester United transfer triangle involving Gareth Bale, Fabregas and Rooney. With Moyes continuing to promise United supporters big names could this be what he's talking about?

Fabregas: Transfer Truth: 30%
Let's start with the most newsworthy part of this little triangle. It has been confirmed now that United have indeed made a bid for Fabregas, and that it has been rejected. David Moyes confirmed on Friday that United board member Ed Woodward had indeed headed home early from United's tour of Asia and Australia in order to deal with the Fabregas transfer:

I am in contact with the chief exec, Ed Woodward, who has been dealing with it (the Fabregas bid) just now. I’ll hopefully know a little more in the next day or so and I may have a bit more information about how it’s going.

A little simple deduction would indicate that the bid had been rejected and that United were now looking to increase that bid. The simple fact is that of the bid had been accepted then Arsenal's buy back clause would have been initiated and they would have something to say on the matter.

Bale: Transfer Truth: 15%
When we initially reported on the Bale transfer to United we discovered that the most recent stories about this had originated in The Mirror and therefore only gave Bale to Manchester United a truth rating of 15%. There is still no solid evidence to further this story but some comments from Moyes recently have given the opportunity for the player to be linked to United again:

As far as players we are looking to bring in, we are working hard to do that and make some additions to the squad. Hopefully there will be some good news in the not too distant future.

Like you, we're not sure what this comment has to do with Bale, it only indicates that United might be interested in trying to sign some good players, which doesn't really need to be stated. That comment would be true of almost any club in the world right now.

Why this story is trending again is because some creative hack at The Mirror has now decided that a transfer triangle involving Rooney going to Chelsea, and in turn United bringing in Fabregas and Bale would be one of those things that is so sexy it's not worth verifying.

Our Truth-o-meter
We stand by the notion that there is an increasing chance that United could land Fabregas, at least we do know for certain that they are after him.

The chances of signing Bale remain largely fictitious, and based on little more than transfer triangle that sound so fantastic it's worth column inches even if it defies reality.

The chances of Bale and Fabregas arriving, and Rooney leaving in the same transfer window are so teeny that they're not even making our truth-o-meter tremble from it's zero resting position but given that the Fabregas and Rooney parts of it do contain solid evidence of bids having been made, we're going to give the chances of all 3 of these transfers going through a truth rating of 10%.

Likeliness of Signing Bale and Fabregas: 10%
Fit at Club: 90%
