Transfer Truth: The Truth on Papiss Cisse to Zenit St Petersburg

Posted on Jul 23rd, 2013 by James Ellaby

It's probable that no player has ever been transferred for refusing to wear his own team's kit, but Papiss Cisse looks like he might be the first, with Zenit St Petersburg rumoured to be his destination.

Cisse: Transfer Truth: 60%
Cisse, in case you hadn't heard, is refusing to wear the new Newcastle United kit because it is sponsored by Wonga, the payday loans company. As a practising Muslim, he sees it as wrong and won't take part in promoting that kind of service.

It's a remarkable situation and a huge blow for Newcastle, as he has been one of their most important players of recent years, but it's impossible to see a resolution to it as neither side can back down.

That just leaves the possibility of moving on, and Zenit St Petersburg are apparently interested in signing him, having already splashed out on the likes of Andriy Arshavin, Hulk and Axel Witsel recently.

They've got the money and the draw of an increasingly star-studded squad, so as long as he approves of their choice of shirt sponsors, the Daily Express reckon it could be a go-er.

With Newcastle desperate to bring in fresh striking talent, losing the best of what they currently have could be an inconceivably large blow, so they may well try and take some steps to avoid this situation, like maybe allow Cisse alone to wear an unsponsored shirt, but there are a lot of reports suggesting the more likely route is a swift exit.

Our Truth-O-Meter
There's certainly no doubt that Cisse's future at Newcastle looks to be brief, with his very real misgivings about Wonga not something that will be resolved by a pay rise or any of the usual tricks.

He hasn't travelled to Portugal with the rest of the squad, which is always a bad sign, and if Zenit do want him and offer the right money, this could be a quick move.

That's assuming they do want him, of course, and there's no evidence yet that they do, so we're keeping this as merely a possible move at the moment.
