Transfer Truth: The Truth on Ryan Bertrand To Liverpool

Posted on Jul 21st, 2013 by James Ellaby

The Daily Express are claiming that Liverpool have tried to continue their low key accumulation of quality players with a bid for Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand. And that they've failed.

Bertrand: Transfer Truth: 30%
There's only rumours that this bid has taken place, backed up with the fact that Brendan Rodgers knows Bertrand from his time at Stamford Bridge, where he worked with him as a youngster after he joined from Gillingham.

Apparently Rodgers hoped that Chelsea's decision to give Ashley Cole a new contract would force the 23-year-old to seek first team football somewhere else, but it seems that Jose Mourinho sees a future for him.

And the player himself is keen to prove himself and take the chances when they come his way, rather than demanding a transfer or another loan move, Bertrand said:

I have been on loan four or five times but then there comes a time when you have to say, right, I am going to spend some time back at the club and see what happens. Obviously I want to be Chelsea's No1 left-back, and when that time comes it will happen. All I can do is be ready and keep playing, keep biding my time.

It seems that with Chelsea happy to keep the player, and Bertrand determined to prove himself at Stamford Bridge, there is little truth to this rumour. The only logical assumption is that Ashley Cole's new contract means Bertrand will have to wait at least another season or two before he gets his crack at the whip, and tat may just bee too long for the 23 year old to wait.

Our Truth-O-Meter
Unless someone is putting two and two together on quite an in-depth scale, the connection between Rodgers and Bertrand is a fairly vague one, so we can maybe be safe assuming that there's some substance to this story.

It's also unusual to invent a rumour and say that is already dead in the water, as this one seems to be, so we'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

With neither Chelsea nor Bertrand seemingly wanting him to go anywhere, we can pretty much write off any chance of him playing for Liverpool next season.
