Transfer Truth: The Truth on Bernard to Liverpool

Posted on Jul 20th, 2013 by Matt Jackson

Liverpool's pursuit of attacking midfield talent is hotting up, with a number of names floating around. The most amusing of those names has to be Bernard, the unlikely-sounding Brazilian left-winger.

Transfer Truth: 50%
Bernard (full name Bernadr Anicio Caldeira Duarte) is a 20-year-old rising star who has made a handful of appearances for his national team and is proving to be a hit with Atletico Mineiro after breaking into the first team on a regular basis last year.

He's fast and strong and has a decent goal-scoring record, and he's been targeted a few times by foreign clubs, including Spartak Moscow. He's apparently caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers, with the Daily Telegraph, Times and Daily Mail today claiming that a move could be on the cards.

There's nothing to back up their claim other than that he's a talented young player in a position Liverpool need to improve, and he's apparently got a £20m release clause in his contract.

However, according to Sambafoot, Brazilian journalist Paulo Freitas is claiming that the release clause is actually closer to £60m. There's lots of other clubs also apparently interested, but the only solid information is from Mineiro, who say that there have been five bids so far. But not who from. In an interview reported in The Metro, Atletico Mineiro president Alexandre Kalil said:

We have had five offers for Bernard, that is true. I have already said that I don’t want to talk about transfers, but it is true that there are five clubs in for him as has been reported.

Our Truth-O-Meter
There's nothing solid to connect Liverpool with Bernard, so we're staying sceptical about that. Sambafoot reckon that Porto are interested and their shared language/culture could be a draw for a young Brazilian, while a shared connection to his part-owners BMG would also work in their favour. With the Atletico Mineiro president confirming that 5 clubs have shown interest, even if Liverpool were in the race, they could be one of many suitors including othe English ckubs so we're only giving them a 20% chance of landing this player.

As for his talents, anyone from Brazil can look good in YouTube clips and that's all we've really go to go on, so there's no guarantee that he'd be a good fit at Anfield if they did manage to fight off the competition.
