Transfer Truth: The Truth on Bernard to Arsenal

Posted on Jul 30th, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

Highly rated Brazilian attacking midfielder Bernard has been linked with numerous clubs this summer including Arsenal and Liverpool but the latest developments suggest both English clubs could miss out unless they put their money where their mouth is.

Bernard: Transfer Truth: 60%
The talents of the young Brazilian are undeniable, his last season at Atletico Mineiro brought a stunning return of 11 goals and 12 assists from 36 appearances and at just 20 years old he could develop in to a world class player, so the £22m being asked for him is not that astronomical given the current market.

Bernard has plenty of love for his current club but seems to have accepted the notion of needing to play in Europe if he wants to be a world star and there are plenty of sides lining up for his services. His agent recently listed at least two of the potential suitors:

I can confirm that the possibility [of joining Porto] is strong, but there is Shakhtar, too. It should be between those [clubs]. On Monday or Tuesday there should be something more concrete.

There are also quotes from his Brazilian team mate Hulk urging him to join Porto, where he is far more likely to get regular game time to develop himself with rather than going to a club like Arsenal who have numerous attacking midfield talents that would restrict his first team opportunities.

Arsenal Interested
Bernard's father has also recently commented on the matter stating that there have been inquiries from Wenger's side:

Nothing is decided yet but we know there is interest from Arsenal. However, there has been nothing official from them.

It might just be that the agent and father are working to increase the options and potential wages of their mutual interest but it does seem to be the same old story for Arsenal. Whilst there has been interest the club appear to have baulked at the price and let the transfer slide.

Given the benefits of a common language, the increased likeliness of attaining a work permit and the much higher chance of the kind of regular game time a developing 20 year old needs, we think Porto are the front runners in this race should they be able to stump up the fee.

Although Bernard is fond if his current club and may yet chose to stay it seems the interest in the player is at a high level and only he himself could prevent a move. For that reason we can give a high truth rating of 60% to the transfer as a whole but only an outside 20% chance that his eventual destination will be Arsenal.

Likeliness of Signing: 20%
Fit at Club: 70%
