Stunning Chelsea Top in Premier League 1st Match Table

Posted on Aug 16th, 2013 by Matt Styrka

Chelsea's opening day results in recent years have been nothing short of astonishing making the Blues comfortably the best opening day performers in the Premier League.

Stunning Starts
Despite a whole raft of different managers being in charge for Chelsea's first game of the season over the years they've maintained an incredible record of having failed to one just a single game of their opening fixtures in the last 11 seasons.

Ominous Blip
In 2011/12 Andre Villa Boas failed to win his first game in charge away at Stoke by drawing 0-0 to produce the only blip on an otherwise impeccable and astonishing record. Though it should be noted that Chelsea went on to win 6 of the next 7 games ensuring another great start to the season. For those that believe in omens that was the only season during the entire 11 year stretch in which Chelsea finished outside of the top 3, eventually coming in 6th place!

The Stunning Starts
Chelsea's track record for stunning starts is pretty remarkable, over the course of the last 11 years only on 3 occasions have they failed to win at least 6 of their opening 8 fixtures to find themselves on top of the table.

The most notable recent opening run being consecutive 6-0 wins against West Brom an Wigan which got the 2010/11 off to a flyer under Carlo Ancelotti. Whilst Drogba bagged himself an opening day hattrick the Wigan game produced 6 different goal scorers.

Mourinho's Way
Chelsea's starts under Mourinho have been a different but equally impressive kettle of fish. In his first season in charge (in 04/05) Chelsea started their season 1-0 defeat of Manchester United and went on to concede a single goal in their opening 8 fixtures after a string of 1-0 victories saw them concede just 15 goals all season and clinch the title.

Mourinho's next season saw Chelsea win all of their opening 9 games, once again refusing to concede a goal in the first 6 games whilst scoring 12. The following seasons told much the same story. The old Mourinho way seems to be one which might not see Chelsea blast in the goals at a ridiculous rate but they will give away precious little at the back.

This season's opening fixtures at home against Hull and Villa may well give the new Chelsea manager an opportunity to boost his opening game goal scoring tallies so expect fire works in Chelsea's opening games.
