Rumour Of The Day: Rondon to Liverpool or Manchester City

Posted on Jul 31st, 2013 by James Ellaby

Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon has emerged as a new option for Liverpool if they need to replace Luis Suarez this summer.

The 23-year-old currently plays for Russian club Rubin Kazan, signing for them last summer from Malaga after a successful couple of seasons in La Liga.

He's already off the mark this season for Rubin, with the Russian league having got underway earlier this month, and he found the net against Zenit St Petersburg.

Rondon cost them just under £9m last year, so they would certainly be looking to get around that figure, if not more for him.

He was linked with a move to Manchester City earlier in the sumer, having worked with Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga, but played down that rumour.

The press sometimes come to conclusions from sources that nobody knows. The truth is that I have no formal knowledge about any of those clubs. Yes, we read and hear things in the press, it's talked about that there is possible interest, but until something is made formal, or there is something concrete, I can't tell you anything.

The latest news is that Liverpool aren't alone in their reported interest in him, with Borussia Dortmund eyeing him up as a potential replacement for in-demand Robert Lewandowski.

That rumour comes from Marca, of all places, with the Spanish paper claiming that Dortmund have already contacted Kazan about signing him.

This interest from big clubs like Liverpool and Dortmund is a little surprising, given the relatively underwhelming first season Rondon had at Rubin last year, getting just seven league goals in 25 games, but he's still young enough and talented enough to come good.

But like so many players in the transfer market this summer, his future seems to depend on the future of players like Suarez and Lewandowski.
