Rumour of The Day: Gomis to Newcastle

Posted on Jul 28th, 2013 by James Ellaby

Newcastle have spent the summer arguing internally about payday loans, but reports suggest that a first summer signing is on his way in the shape of Bafetimbi Gomis.

You'd have thought Alan Pardew would have had his fill with uppity footballers after his issues with Papiss Cisse, but he's apparently ready to sign another one, with Gomis currently on strike at Lyon.

He's only got one year left on his contract and seems to have no interest in renewing it, so is trying to force through a move somewhere else, with Newcastle's apparent interest suiting him just fine.

For the Magpies, signing him would give them the replacement for Demba Ba that they so desperately lacked last season, with Gomis having scored 20 goals in 40 games for Lyon in 2012/13.

He's been a consistent scorer for them since joining from Saint-Etienne in 2009, but seems to have had enough of Ligue 1 and wants to try his luck in the Premier League.

Gomis has also been linked with Swansea and Cardiff City, but Newcastle are his favoured destination and reports in various papers suggest a deal could be done within the next 48 hours.

The latest on this are some quotes from Lyon chief Jean-Michel Aulas revealing that negotiations are ongoing, while coach Remi Garde admits that he's expecting Gomis to leave. L'Equipe also say that the initial bid has been rejected.

Certainly he is the kind of player that the Magpies will be after, and will be available at a fair price. At 27 and with French international experience, he'll be able to slot right into the first team and give them the firepower they need.

So, it's safe to say that we're comfortable saying that this is a deal that is not only likely to be true but also likely to happen.
