Rumour Of The Day: Dzeko to Tottenham Hotspur

Posted on Jul 30th, 2013 by James Ellaby

Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit of a new top striker has mostly been focused on trying to sign Roberto Soldado from Valencia, but with conflicting reports about how likely that is to happen, are they now targeting Edin Dzeko from Manchester City?

The Bosnian striker has had a mixed time at Eastlands, fluctuating between seeming essential and expendable, and the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini and his new signings Alvaro Negredo and Stefan Jovetic look like they have pushed him down the pecking order.

He's certainly proved, when given the chance by Roberto Mancini, that he can be an effective force in the Premier League, even without making the impact he made in the Bundesliga, so he could be a useful signing for Spurs.

However, Pellegrini seems far from convinced that he should let Dzeko go, hardly surprising given his pre-season form, which saw him score the winner against Sunderland in the Asia Trophy at the weekend.

I have a lot of trust in him. Everyone was talking before I arrived that we will bring in Cavani, Lewandowski, all those players. But I always trusted in Edin Dzeko and he is now playing the way I want. I am sure he will continue improving

Those don't seem to be the words of a manager who expects to be selling that player any time soon, even if the 'now playing the way I want' part might seem a bit condescending.

Dzeko himself is also not talking like someone who expects to be anywhere else in 2013/14.

We had a good pre-season with the new manager and all of us are definitely looking forward to the Premier League. We want to achieve some good things next season.

Whether City or Dzeko have a choice to make about his future seems entirely dependent on whether or not Spurs sign Soldado, but if that falls through, we'll see whether those quotes were merely words.
