Rumour Of The Day - Benzema to Liverpool

Posted on Jul 27th, 2013 by James Ellaby

Karim Benzema has been linked with a move to the Premier League ever since he made a big impression for Lyon against Manchester United in the Champions League in 2007/08. No English move ever materialised though, with Sir Alex Ferguson losing out to Real Madrid for the French striker.

Despite featuring in a star-studded squad at the Bernabeu, Benzema has been a key figure for them ever since joining, but there are reports that he could be used as a makeweight in a bid to get Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

With the Reds playing hardball over what fee they expect for the Uruguayan star - basically, they want what Napoli got for Edinson Cavani, which was £55m - it might take more than cash to convince them to change their position.

That is where Real Madrid have the advantage over Arsenal, in that they've got a surplus of talent they could use to tempt Brendan Rodgers into letting go of Suarez.

Benzema certainly fits into that category, giving Liverpool a world class striker to replace the one they've already got. He scored 21 times in 50 games last season but also managed an impressive 18 assists and has been a regular scorer at international level too.

As well as being a pacy and prolific striker, he's also capable of switching to either wing, which would definitely appeal to Rodgers, who has also been looking at wide players this summer to bolster Liverpool's attacking menace.

While his position at Madrid seems secure at the moment, particularly with the impending departure of Gonzola Higuain, if they did go for Suarez, that would likely see Benzema pushed down the pecking order, so a swap deal might appeal to him.

He's currently valued at around £30m, so would take up a big chunk of the Suarez fee, particularly with another two years left on his contract.
