Pundit Predictions on Manchester United vs Everton
Posted on Feb 8th, 2013 by Jim Walker
78% of our pundits are backing Manchester United to beat Everton at Old Trafford this weekend with a little under half of those thinking it will be by two or more goals. With United undefeated in their last 13 they are in great form but do Everton have more of a chance than they're being given?
Manchester United's rude form is undeniable at the moment, they've dropped points in just 2 games in their last 13 with Spurs and Swansea the only teams able to prevent Sir Alex's team from winning during that stretch. When you look at their home form the outlook is even more frightening for the rest of the league. United have failed to win only 1 home game all season and are averaging 2.7 goals per game.
Running Out of Steam
All hope is not lost for Everton though, over the last few games United have shown minor signs that they might be running out of steam.
They were perhaps a little fortune to hang on to a 2-1 home win against Liverpool, then they went and drew 1-1 at White Hart Lane. This was followed by a 2-1 home win against Southampton who Ferguson said were the best team to have played at Old Trafford this season, they certainly gave United a far harder time than anyone had expected and in their last game away to out of form Fulham, who have conceded an alarming 42 goals this season (the 5th worst record in the league) United scraped together a 1-0 win thanks to a late Wayne Rooney goal.
In that game Fulham created more chances than United and Sir Alex's team might have been punished if Fulham's forwards had been in better form. Even the irrepressible Van Persie has now gone two full games without a goal. A drought of sorts by his standards.
One Eye on The Champions League
To add to Everton's chances, United have a crucial fixture coming up against Real Madrid in the Champions League and having beaten United on the opening day of the season, Everton are exactly the kind of team that will beat you if you take your eye off the ball so we think they have a far better chance of snatching something than they are being given credit for.
Despite conceding a few too many goals and drawing one too many games, Everton's form is actually pretty good right now. They've lost just once in their last 13 games, which is only one more than United and they currently have the 5th best away record in the league. In fact they've lost just twice on the road alls season and always find that little bit extra against the big boys so they can pose a major threat to United.
The Final Word
Everton really have a far better chance than they are being given by our pundits, we think a draw is well within reason against a United side distracted by the Champions League and having a little dip in ferocity. If this were at Goodison we'd be backing Everton but the home advantage will be just enough to edge it for United.
Our Prediction: Narrow United win in with both teams to score. A draw is a much more distinct possibility than people my think.
