On Fire: Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey Rising to the Top

Posted on Sep 16th, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

Aaron Ramsey has long been the focus of ridicule for many Arsenal supporters but this season the Welshman has been something of a revelation in an injury battered side.

Ramsey: Top 20 Premier League Midfielder
Not only has Ramsey played every minute of Arsenal's 4 Premier League games and 2 Champion's League qualifiers, but having been deployed in multiple positions he has covered himself in glory by banging in 5 goals and creating 1 assist. He is justifiably in our top 20 Premier League Midfielders based on form in the first month of the season.

Only Yaya Toure (309) has completed more passes than Ramsey's 270 so far this season in the Premier League and his 87% pass accuracy ranks him amongst the best in the league. The very bast midfielders can rack up 90% plus, but once again only Toure can match Ramsey when it comes to the volume of passes being made combined with high accuracy.

Finishing is perhaps the area Ramsey has improved in the most. He was incredibly wasteful in the past and his previous best goal tally for an entire Premier League season is just 3. With 4 games gone this season he's only 1 shy of that league record. It's worth bearing in mind that he's still only 22.

It could just be that he is only now starting to gain confidence and mature as a player, there may well be plenty more to come from him as a regular goal threat if he can turn this run of form in to a coming of age.

Team Contribution
Even though it is his goals that are standing out right now there is another key stat in which Ramsey is currently the leading midfielder in the league. Ramsey has won 19 (of the 20) tackles he has attempted this season, 4 more than the next best in the league and with exceptional pass accuracy he has proved himself as a all round ball winner, distributor and scorer. He also appears in the top 20 list for interceptions, blocked shots, clearances and shots on goal for all Midfielders.

If Ramsey can keep up this level of performance he may yet be able to fend off competition from the likes of Cazorla, Podolski, Chamberlain and Arteta when they return from injury. His recent run has shown that he is capable of being deployed further up the field but with a defensive discipline and ability that some of the others may lack.
