Newcastle vs. Liverpool - Predictions from 9,000 Players

Posted on Oct 19th, 2013 by Amrit Nagi

Liverpool return from the international break off the back of consecutive 3-1 victories against Sunderland and Crystal Palace and are heavily backed to make it 3 wins in a row when they go to The Sports Direct Arena to play Newcastle with 68% currently backing Rodgers' men for the win.

The fierce backing of Liverpool is understandable given their form. With Sturridge and Suarez in scintillating form it's no surprise that Liverpool have scored as many goals in their last two matches as they did in the opening 5 games of the season.

One or two questions have crept in about the defence though. Liverpool are now with out a clean sheet in 4 games with Brendan Rodgers having adapted what he called a 3-4-1-2 formation that has left them looking a little uncertain at the back at times. Had Palace or Sunderland gotten a little more luck against Liverpool the score liverpool the score lines could have been very different indeed.

There is of course, also the growing concern about Liverpool's inability to score 2nd half goals. Just 1 goal in 7 games is the worst record in the league and you have to wonder what will happen if Newcastle can hold firm for the first 45. This issue is likely to be short term but it does hint that there might be one or two players lacking full fitness in the squad.

Newcastle might be a little under rated here. With just 32% backing them to get a draw or better it might tell the tale of a team out of form and in big trouble, but this is far from the truth.

With Loic Remy having scored 5 goals in his last 3 games there will be plenty to worry a less than resolute Liverpool defence and there are goals elsewhere in the Newcastle team too with the Geordies having scored 2 goals in each of their last 4.

There is plenty of creative talent in Pardew's side and they will provide a much sterner test for Liverpool than our pundits are predicting, especially if they can get a little luck and more crucially hold Liverpool down during the first half of the game.

Our Prediction
Liverpool are without a clean sheet in 4 as Rodgers' new back line set up beds in, during the same period Newcastle have scored 2 goals past each of the teams they've come across so it looks like there may well be goals here and Newcastle may well find themselves celebrating more than once. If Liverpool score early and force the game to open up it could be a goal fest but for this reason it's likely that Newcastle emphasis will be to shut Liverpool out in the first 45 and plot their raids for later on in the game.

This will be a tougher test for Liverpool than most people are expecting but with both teams in good attacking form we should see an entertaining match and our prediction is that Liverpool will just edge it in a game where both teams will score. Though we won't be placing a big wager on this one.
