Manchester United's Player of the Week in GW2

Posted on Aug 28th, 2013 by Matt Styrka

The game between Manchester United and Chelsea may have produced no goals, but this wasn't down to the lack of attacking flair on the pitch, it was down to exceptional defensive performances from both sides.

Namanja Vidic
Chelsea's 6 attacking midfield players were expected to find the gaps between the Manchester United defence and midfield regularly but outstanding performances from both United center backs ensured there was little to no action through the middle and allowed United to take the game to Chelsea down the wings.

The powerhouse that is Namanja Vidic produced yet another exceptional performance in United colours not by making last ditch tackles but through world class leadership and reading of the game that laid the foundation for an organised and impenetrable United back line.

Vidic marshalled the United defence and repeatedly cut out potential Chelsea attacks before they ever had a chance to develop. His 13 clearances was only 3 short of the highest tally in the league. He made 3 potentially crucial interceptions in the game and won every one of the 3 tackles he attempted, denying Chelsea a total of 19 potential attacks.

Vidic's passing was also exceptional, when he won the ball for United he was composed and precise with 58 of his 61 passes finding the target and two of them leading to goal scoring opportunities for United at the other end. Needless to say this was higher than any other defender in the league last week making Vidic our stand out United player last week, followed closely by the likes of Ferdinand, Carrick and Cleverly, all of whom contributed in significant ways to Chelsea's inability to build any sort of meaningful attacks.

A genuine, world class defensive performance from United's ever reliable Serbian beast at the back.
