Manchester United v Chelsea - Predictions from 8,000 Players

Posted on Aug 26th, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

Despite the fact that Manchester United have had one of the most solid home records in the Premier League over the past few seasons only 35% of our 8,000 players are predicting that United can win their encounter against Mourinho's side on Monday.

Chelsea's Start
Many were expecting Chelsea to smash Hull in their first game and possibly Villa too in midweek but the games told a different if unsurprising story. When we reported on Chelsea's Premier League starts under Mourinho last week we expected the Blues to win both games but were also convinced they might not be big wins. Mourinho's sides typically do not start their seasons with a bucket full of goals even if they do record big numbers of victories.

Chelsea looked a little gassed in the second half against Hull and you could even argue that Villa may well have nicked a point from Stamford Bridge had they been a little more lucky. There was certainly a case to be made on whether or not the scorer of their winning goal (Ivanovic) should have been on the pitch to nod home.

Chelsea managed just 3 shots on target in the entire game against Villa, having managed only 5 against Hull a few days earlier and whilst there is too much quality in the side for this not to improve drastically, they might not find themselves on the end of too many clear cut chances at a place like Old Trafford. Especially with Ferdinand and Vidic both fit.

United's Start
The United's 4-1 victory over Swansea was one of the surprises of the weekend. The Liberty Stadium was a giants grave yard last season and with Swansea having improved over the summer there were many doubters who though Moyes might slip at the first time of asking. In the end clinical finishing and the quality of opportunities created was the difference between the sides in a game where Swansea actually had more shots on goal than United.

Our Prediction
This could be a cagey, tight old game with few clear cut chances if the start to the season for both sides is anything to go by. If there is a difference between the sides it will come down to who can be more clinical on the day and whilst Chelsea have scored 4 goals from their 8 shots on target so far this season United have managed 4 from 7 shots on target so the teams appear evenly matched in that regard too which is why we're going for a draw.
