Liverpool's Player of the Week for Week 1

Posted on Aug 21st, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

Liverpool looked slick, sharp and dangerous during their game against Stoke, and in reality they should have scored one or two more goals. Whilst there were a number of outstanding performers including Sturridge and Aspas, one man stood put above all the rest for us.

Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho's blistering end to last season had already made him a potentially tasty proposition this time around. He quickly laid any doubts to rest by picking up exactly where he left off. He was a constant threat to Stoke and produced a league high of 6 key passes. In addition he provided 3 accurate through balls which was also a league high.

There is no doubting the quality of his work and excellent link up play with Daniel Sturridge and Aspas, had it not been for the outstanding Begovic in the Stoke goal Coutinho would have seen his labours produce more fruits in the way of goals and assists.

Although his passing accuracy of 79% was a little way below the leagues best passers (with the likes of Hazard and Yaya Toure achieving 90% plus) his ability to take measured risks and provide penetrating ammunition to those around him made him a highly effective threat.

Part of the reason behind Coutinho's relatively low total of 46 passes was the amount of cover he provided going backwards. The Brazilian also made 6 tackles (the equal third highest tally in the league) which means he contributed far more going backwards than you might expect, giving him a fantastic all round performance.
