Liverpool vs. Manchester United - Predictions from 8,000 Players

Posted on Sep 1st, 2013 by Jim Walker

Our players have made Manchester United the favourites for this game with 45% backing Moye's men to take all 3 points. 27% is a decent backing for Liverpool but perhaps lower than might have been expected given their 100% record and home advantage.

Liverpool Analysis
Liverpool looked irresistible in their opening game against Stoke, creating 26 chances in a game where they should have scored 3 or 4. The away game against what is increasingly looking like a very good Villa side was a different story though. Rodgers' men had just one shot on target in that match and managed to come away with an excellent result from a pedestrian performance.

There is no denying the awesome potential of the Liverpool attack, especially when playing at home. The worrying thing though is the number of chances they have given away. Stoke had 10 shots against Liverpool and were unlucky not to score at least one goal. A week later Villa created 17 chances and Notts County even managed to score twice at Anfield forcing a fairly strong Liverpool line up in to an unwanted 120 minutes.

Our feeling is that it's going to take time for Liverpool's new center back pairing to get used to one another and become tight enough to deny teams like Manchester United what could be too many goal scoring opportunities.

Manchester United Analysis
United started their season off with an excellent 4-1 win away at Swansea and were probably just about the better team against Chelsea at Old Trafford last week when the outstanding partnership of Ferdinand and Vidic, coupled with very astute tactics denied Chelsea any real goal scoring opportunities.

With Liverpool's defence having already shown a propensity to leak a few goal scoring chances, United's clinical finishing could be the difference in this game. If the Liverpool back line gives United the same 10 chances it gave each of Notts County and Stoke, you can expect United to score 2 or 3 goals and we think United could create even more chances than the two previous visitors to Anfield this season so we definitely expect them to be on the score sheet at least once whilst being rock solid at the back once again.

Our Prediction
Liverpool's new center back pairing still needs time to mature and if Rodgers' defence is as open to United attacks as they have been to those of their other opponents this season Liverpool will be seriously punished.

We were tempted to say that United will edge this match and come away with all 3 points on the basis that their defence has looked steely and their attack clinical, but we think the derby atmosphere and home advantage will give Liverpool the required boost in concentration to make up the difference between the current ability levels of the two teams and get a draw from this game.
