How Good Is: Arsenal and United Target Angel Di Maria

Posted on Aug 29th, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

The apparently immanent arrival of Gareth Bale at Real Madrid has generated a whole host of potential departures from the Spanish club and the most prominent of those to be linked to the Premier League is 25 year old Argentine winger Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria: Top 50 Attacking Midfielder
Di Maria may be a well known name on the world football stage thanks to 4 successful years spent Real and the 40 caps he's won for Argentina but he may still be an under rated talent with plenty more to offer than we have seen already. He has managed to maintain a top drawer record even though he has been given the full 90 minutes in just 35 of his 139 Real Madrid appearances.

Comparisons
The Real Madrid wide man stacks up well against similar recent acquisitions. His career record of 136 minutes per goal contributed is far better than the 165 minutes achieved by Chelsea new boys Willian and Schurrle. He also clocks in slightly better than Theo Walcott's career stats of 143 minutes per goal contributed.

League Record
Despite being a substitute in more than half of his 92 league appearances he has contributed at a world class level, scoring 18 times and making 44 assists which gives him an astonishing contribution of a goal for every 92 minutes of game time. To put that in to perspective that is almost identical to the tally achieved by Gareth Bale last season and far better than Bale's over all career stats. He might not find it as easy in a team that isn't so star studded but his league stats at Real paint the picture of a genuine, top 10 attacking midfielder let alone top 50.

MPGC: 92 mins

Champions League
At 25 years old, Di Maria comes with the added bonus of vast Champions League experience. 33 appearances in Europe's top competition have produced 5 goals and 9 assists giving him a MPGC of 159 minutes which again is top drawer for that level. He has also had excellent success playing the the Europa League for Benfica where his MPGC was on par with his league record.

MPGC: 159 mins

International
Di Maria is also an experienced international campaigner. He has received 40 caps for Argentina, scoring 8 times and making 11 assists to give him a goal contributed for every 150 minutes of game time, which once again is outstanding at international level.

MPGC: 150 mins

Our Rating
Di Mari's attacking stats make us drool. This guy really is a world class player who has maintained astonishing numbers at every level of the game even though he has rarely been given the leisure of a full 90 minutes. He certainly has the class and potential to prove himself as one of the world's top players if he finds himself at a club where he's a regular starter. His masses of experience and ability to create goals would make him an absolute snip at £30m in today's market and a comfortable world top 50 ranking on our list attacking midfielders.
