Arsenal Undefeated in 11 Years of Opening Days

Posted on Aug 16th, 2013 by Araz Heydariyehzadeh

Arsenal currently have the 2nd best opening day record of any team in the Premier League having remained undefeated in the last 11 years of opening day games, but their record is in danger of slipping.

Undefeated Arsenal
It's hugely impressive that Gunners have not tasted opening day defeat for a full 11 seasons, the last of which was a 1-0 loss to Sunderland way back in 2000/01 when they went on to finish second in the league.

Recent Worries
What is surprising about Arsenal's opening day record is that up until 3 seasons ago it was almost unblemished by even draws. The last 3 years though have seen them fail to win any with Liverpool, Newcastle and Sunderland all holding the Gunners to opening day draws in games they might have expected to win.

Over the last 2 seasons Arsenal have failed to score in either of their opening 2 fixtures as they have gone from being one of the best starters in the Premier League to one in danger of losing their status amongst the league's finest.

Villa Remedy
This season's opening day offering presents a fantastic opportunity for the Gunners to break their duck and walk off with 3 points from the visit of Villa to The Emirates. With a lack of new faces and masses of frustration for Arsenal supporters this summer anything less than a win could see the moans and groans elevated to dangerous levels so Wenger should be keener than ever to get the season started off on the right foot.

The last tome Arsenal started their season with a win was back in 2009/10 when they stuffed Everton 6-1 at Goodison and also went on to win their next game 4-1 with Diaby scoring a hat trick. Whilst we might not be expecting the same again a Villa team that was very leaky on the road last term should provide Arsenal with ample opportunities to bag a handsome win this time out and end their recent poor run of opening day results.
